Waterfowl Taxidermy: What You Need to Know Before You Go

February 18, 2025 · 5 min read

Waterfowl — ducks, geese, and other wetland birds — are some of the most colorful and striking animals in North America. A well-done waterfowl mount captures the iridescent plumage and lifelike attitude of these birds in a way that photographs simply can't match. But waterfowl taxidermy comes with its own unique challenges.

Choosing Your Mount Pose

Waterfowl mounts can be displayed in a wide variety of poses — swimming, landing, standing, or in flight. Flying mounts are the most dramatic, and a group of ducks mounted in flight above a piece of driftwood can create a stunning display. Swimming poses work well for mantlepieces and shelves, while standing poses are a classic option for single birds. Discuss pose options with your taxidermist before committing, and look at examples of their bird work specifically.

Field Care Is Critical

Birds are among the most delicate subjects for taxidermy because feathers are easily damaged and very difficult to repair. After harvesting a bird you want mounted, fold the wings tightly against the body, wrap the bird loosely in a paper towel to absorb moisture, and place it in a plastic bag. Keep it cool and dry — never soak a bird you intend to mount. Avoid carrying the bird by its neck or wings, as this can pull feathers loose. Freeze the bird as soon as possible if you won't be at a taxidermist within 24 hours.

Costs and Legal Considerations

A single duck or small bird mount typically runs $150 to $350, while a full-size Canada goose mount can cost $400 to $700. All migratory waterfowl are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which means your taxidermist must keep records of mounted birds and you must be able to prove the bird was taken legally. Make sure you retain your hunting license, stamps, and any relevant permits, as your taxidermist will need documentation to mount protected species.

With the right field care and a skilled taxidermist, a mounted waterfowl trophy can be a centerpiece display that captures a beautiful morning on the marsh for years to come.
