Harvesting a black bear or grizzly is an achievement that deserves serious consideration when it comes to preservation. Bears offer more taxidermy options than almost any other game animal, from full body mounts to dramatic rug displays, and the results can be truly stunning when done right.
Bear Rug Mounts
The bear rug is a classic option — the hide is tanned and mounted flat with the head fully sculpted and positioned at one end, often with an open mouth showing the teeth. Bear rugs make an incredible statement on a hardwood floor or draped over a log furniture piece. They're also the more affordable option, typically ranging from $800 to $2,000 depending on the size of the bear. Field care is critical — get the hide off quickly, flesh it thoroughly, and salt it generously before transport.
Full Body Bear Mounts
A full body bear mount is among the most impressive pieces in any trophy room. The bear can be posed standing upright, on all fours, or in a dramatic charging position. These mounts require significant space and a significant investment — a large black bear full body mount starts at $2,500 and can easily exceed $5,000 for a large grizzly with a habitat base. The finished piece, however, is absolutely breathtaking and commands attention in any room.
Field Care and Hide Preparation
Bears have very thick hides and a heavy layer of fat that must be removed quickly to prevent slippage — where the hair begins to separate from the skin due to bacterial activity. Skin the bear as soon as possible after harvest, flesh the hide carefully, and apply salt immediately and generously. If you're in the backcountry, keep the hide cool and shaded and get it to a taxidermist or freezer within a day or two. Contact your taxidermist before the hunt to discuss their preferred care instructions, as bear capes are expensive and unforgiving if mishandled.
Bear taxidermy is a significant investment, but a well-crafted bear mount is something you'll treasure for a lifetime. Take your time choosing a taxidermist with documented experience in large predator mounts before committing.
